Question by carrie love: how important is landscaping when trying to sell a home?
My husband and I are disagreeing about this. One of us says that it's not that important. If we make it great on the inside, they won't care if we have pretty flowers and new mulch. The other one thinks that if the landscaping is not fairly updated (not spectacular, but nice mulch and a few flowers) that people will drive by and not want to come inside. What do you think? Is it that important? Also, are there any sites that tell you how much different improvements that you make to your house will increase it's value?

very important - not only is it pleasing to the eyes - it shows an owner who has taken the time to take care of things and has personal pride in their belongings - that can be reflected in the home also - fresh paint, clean surroundings, clean rugs - all minor things repaired - can boost the overall value of the home - most persons like to move into a home with less work to start with - plus you might even be able to get more than you think for your home - good luck - best wishes to you and yours - these are all proven factors that help the home to sell itself!

What are good landscaping plants or shrubs?

Question by jacknchloe: What are good landscaping plants or shrubs?
I am wanting to do some landscaping in our front yard. I am wanting to plant something in the front of a bedroom window. We live in Dallas so I think it is Zone 8. What are some plants, shrubs that would look good in front of a bedroom window? Something that takes little maintenance but will grow good in part sun/part shade but also will make the front of the house look better.

Answer by Saso
May is a good time to plant new shrubs. Shrubs, along with trees can increase the value of your property and make it more attractive. Their beauty begins with spring and summer blooms followed by lush foliage and autumn color. The variety of forms and textures add interest to the landscape.

Shrubs may be used to screen views, soften hard edges, enclose spaces and visually connect the home to the ground. Many shrubs attract wildlife with berries and shelter. There are shrubs for both sun and shade.

Youtube Transforms Political Campaign Landscape

The year is 2008 and if you haven't heard, and the only way you could not have heard is if you live in a box, is that America is in the midst of a Presidential election year.

Regardless of whom your candidate is, one thing is for sure, unlike the previous elections, the internet has and will continue to make a tremendous impact.

In a recent interview on NPR, Tony Cox reports about an interview he had with News and Notes web producer Geoffrey Bennett. Cox writes how Bennett claims, “Our level of online activism has spiked, given that more people are directly engaged either forwarding emails or reading campaign literature or, as you said, watching videos on YouTube.” He goes on to say, “Nearly half of Americans have used the Internet, email and text messaging to get political news. During this campaign, the number of people who have made political contributions online is triple that of 2004. And 35 percent of Americans have watched a political video online. That's' three times the number in 2004.”

YouTube and the internet have transformed this landscape. Information about the candidates has become readily accessible twenty four hours a day, 7 days a week. Whether it is spoof videos on YouTube or up to the minute information about your candidate on their Facebook or MySpace pages, chances are millions of people are flocking to the World Wide Web for information.

With blogging going mainstream due to its ease of use and ability for anyone to write freely and express themselves, the internet also posses the problem of information overload. Now voters will really have to think hard about who they are voting for, given the thousands of pieces of information at their fingertips.

My series "Dirty Urban Landscapes" celebrate the city as a chaotic, anarchic palimpsest of different historical and cultural layers and signs.

Sigmund Freud was the first who used the metaphor of the urban palimpsest to describe the structure of the human unconscious in "Civilization and Its Discontents". He recognized a similarity between the layered construction of cities, made of gradual additions and erasures, and the human psyche:

"Suppose that Rome is not a human habitation but a psychical entity with a similarly long and copious past - an entity, that is to say, in which nothing that has once come into existence will have passed away and all the earlier phases of development continue to exist alongside the latest one [...]". In this passage, he compares the layered construction of Rome through history with the behavior of the human brain, which floats amidst layers of memories and amnesia.

Cities are palimpsests "where traces of heterogeneous times accumulate", and the architecture of the city "comes to be the testimony par excellence of daily life, because in its fixity the vicissitudes of humankind are registered throughout time". The architecture of the city is an open-air archive of collective and personal memories, as Aldo Rossi poetically argued in the introduction of its "The Architecture of the city":

"Architecture, attesting to the tastes and attitudes of generations, to public events and private tragedies, to new and old facts, is the fixed stage for human events [...] One need only look at the layers of the city that archaeologists show us; they appear as a primordial and eternal fabric of life, an immutable pattern. Anyone who remembers European cities after the bombing of the last war retains an image of disembowelled houses where, amid the rubble, fragments of familiar places remained standing, with their colours of faded wallpaper, laundry hanging suspended in the air, barking dogs - the untidy intimacy of places.
And always we could see the house of our childhood, strangely aged, present in the flux of the city."

Sominel Edelman told me:

"I created twenty very realistic 3D landscapes by using sculpted mega prims and high resolution textures. Each landscape is a combination of 16 prims that mold together almost seamlessly. People who saw the landscapes are amazed that this is possible in SL; they never saw anything like them before."

My series "Dirty Urban Landscapes" celebrates the city as a chaotic, anarchic palimpsest of different historical and cultural layers and signs. It celebrates the city as a "lived space" experienced and actively appropriated by the citizens as opposed to the city as a "conceived space" of orderly development designed by urban planners.

Sigmund Freud was the first who used the metaphor of the urban palimpsest to describe the structure of the human unconscious in "Civilization and Its Discontents". He recognized a similarity between the layered construction of cities, made of gradual additions and erasures, and the human psyche:
