Home Landscape Design Basics

Home Landscape Design Basics

Landscape design basics for your home begin at the planning stages. Landscape design basics help you create all the different and unusual aspects of a front yard along with a garden and entertainment area in your backyard. Your pathways, patio, deck, and driveway areas are all part of your landscape design.

Whether you are re-vamping an existing landscape or creating a new one from scratch can be very rewarding. Your main consideration needs to be the people that will be using the area and they are your family. You may already have a design or theme in mind but your main concern is being able to enjoy it, move easily from one area to another, and to have a view from inside your home. Your garden landscape should be a place to relax and entertain family and friends. If you have a large or small garden you may want to have pathways leading from one area to another.

If you have never designed a landscape before there is one thing to keep in mind and that is drainage.

If it is done properly everything will drain away as it should but if done wrong you will have puddles of water in some areas and no irrigation in other areas; your garden or grass will die if it gets too much or too little water. You may have to build a retaining wall or re-grade your backyard. If that is going to be too costly you may want to consider growing plants in raised garden beds. Drainage is just one landscape design basic that will help in creating a garden landscape for you and your family to enjoy.

Screening or trellis growing can hide things in your yard that you do not what anyone to see plus it will protect many of your plants from the wind if place in the right areas. If you use trellis work on your pathway around the garden it may entice people to want to see what is coming around the corner. You can even use green walls or trellis growing as the walls surrounding your outdoor entertainment room. You need to envision how you want things to look as you wander through the garden or how you want others to enjoy their walk. Think of all the natural settings that surround your home and how you can highlight it for others. You may have mountains, a valley, or a lake as a backdrop and you want others to also enjoy them. You may live in the city and have buildings in the back that you want to hide. Taking a stroll through your yard this way will give you ideas as to how to hide objects or to frame a particular view.

Your children and pets also need to have an area of the backyard garden that is all their own where they can have fun. It is always a good idea to be able to see your children playing even from the inside of your home. You want them to be safe and placing soft rubber pavers under a swing set or jungle gym will help cushion any falls. This play area should be safe enough for your children to invite their friends in to play. You not only want to see your children at play but you do not want your view of the garden landscape blocked by the play area.

It is always a good idea to put all your thoughts and ideas sketched on paper; once you do this it will give you even more ideas. Since you are still planning everything you can move things around to different areas. Map out your yard by using a garden hose for flower bed borders or pathways. A vegetable garden needs to be in an area that receives plenty of sun. You may want an entertainment space in an area that only receives full morning sun and not the hot afternoon sun unless you are going have some type of awning or shade covering. If you have a pool you may want to have sunny areas along with shade areas. A flower garden not only needs a few hours of sun but may also need some shade.

You can still move things around during planning stages, so before you start to dig make sure everything is final. The flower garden and vegetable garden may look better having gentle curves as borders. You may want to place hose guides around those gardens to protect those plants. Make sure your grassy area is going to be easy to mow. Some of these landscape design basics go along with planning and a little patience at the very beginning and you may have that beautiful landscape you always dreamed about creating.

Barbara has done some research on some landscape design basics and incorporated them in her backyard garden. Her website Gardeners Garden Supplies has interesting information regarding many gardening ideas so please visit.

Gardening for City Slickers: Landscape Ideas for Small Spaces

One of the things I remember best about my apartment in Brooklyn was how well the people who owned our building-a conservative Jewish couple who kept the Sabbath weekly-also kept up the flowers in front of our brick row house. Hydrangeas, big globes of blue and purple, growing neatly behind a cast iron grate.

I know I was impressed enough to find out all about hydrangeas, and learned that the blossom color is influenced by the soil they are grown in. Soil in Brooklyn produced blue-ish flowers; soil in my native Midwest produced white flowers, evidently.

I also learned that small spaces can be used to make a big impact when it comes to a garden.

One thing that should be pointed out, that most city types already know, is that the smaller the space, the more attention that can be paid to detail. And virtually any kind of plant can be grown in a small space, as long as you pay attention to the scale and balance. Because more than likely, you will be planting around your residence, the building's character and features come into enhanced focus.

View Your Garden Design Holistically

To create a cohesive garden design that enhances your residence, realistically, you won't have the option of planting as many different plants as you may want. I think one of the reasons the blue hydrangeas worked so well in front of my Brooklyn address was their color contrast against the light yellow bricks of our building, and their height enhanced the look of the entryway.

Some elements to consider:

1. Color and the statement you want to make with it. Cool colors create a more spacious look; warm colors close a space, but can offer a warm, inviting tone. Too many colors won't work well in a small space and will seem cacophonous, so pick a theme and stick with it.

2. Scale, just as an artist or designer would. Maybe one series of plants is your background element, adding height, and the plants in front of those are out there to add a splash of color and variance in shape. Making a sketch of the plants you choose and their placement can help enormously before you go about the planting.

3. Locale. Some plants need more sunlight than others, and won't grow well on a shady street. You'll need to choose plants that offer a combination of beauty and hardiness, adapted to the environment you plan to put them in.

Front Door Gardens

The space in front of your abode is probably crying out for a garden of its own. The architectural elements of a building can be greatly enhanced by even a few carefully placed green or flowering plants, making your residence look inviting and well cared for.

Stone ledges look beautiful with large stone planters chosen to either match the existing stone or to compliment it. Flowing, flowering plants are especially suited to these kinds of containers, as are bunching flowers like begonias or hydrangeas. Multiple plantings of various flowers, as long as they work within a color scheme, can also work.

Front yard/front door beds, though usually fairly small in front of city buildings, can be used effectively for plantings. Flowering bushes and other larger plants, such as hostas, ferns, and larger flowers, do much to make a house or building seem settled and part of the larger environment. They act as an anchor, making the house more approachable and more attractive from a visual standpoint as well as from other sensory perceptions.

Window boxes are wonderful to dress up ledges or windows. They take eye up-and flowers-especially traditional ones like marigolds and pansies-look quaint and charming when planted in window boxes. You might also consider planting grasses, or flowering herbs, which can be both beautiful and useful to the urban gardener.

The best thing about planters is that they are highly versatile, and can be placed on steps or landings, if no other options are available to you. Some common and easy to grow container plants are geraniums (which do well in winter, too, if placed in a sunny window inside), tulips, cactus or succulents, or small trees like ficus. They easily accommodate almost any small space gardening situation.

FireEscapeGardens

I remember walking through neighborhoods in different cities-before I was a city dweller myself-and thinking these were the epitome of urban cool. I still do-they are a testimony to the creativity and ingeniousness of those who have to make do with the space they have. Plus-there is just something visually beautiful about the look of exuberant green foliage against urban architecture.

Some things to think about before starting a fire escape garden:

1. Permanent or seasonal plants? This is probably the largest issue when considering an outdoor fire escape garden in a apartment. Do you have a place in your apartment for perennial plants or those that are considered traditional house plants when the weather turns cold? Do you have the time it takes for growing and maintenance of annuals? These are just things to think about, in consideration of your lifestyle and commitment to the project, in advance.

2. Space allowance. In some buildings, it isn't permissible to block a fire escape stairwell. This is something to ask about in advance, or you may find yourself with a garden that has no home!

3. Consider trees. Just like for those lucky enough to have a roof top garden, trees on a fire escape garden add shade and ambiance if you are planning to use your fire escape as an mini outdoor retreat or small sitting area. Smaller plants can be maintained in boxes or containers around a couple larger trees planted in pots, adding to the variety and creating a good visual variance of scale.

Vegetable and Fruit Gardening in the City

Vegetable gardens traditionally have been located in separate areas from ornamental gardens, but the small spaces most people have to deal when considering a city garden make this notion virtually impossible. The concept has all but become obsolete in mainstream gardening, anyhow. Now, vegetables, fruits and herbs are grown right alongside flowers and other plants, and can be just as attractive.

Some good plants city gardeners might consider (though it is up to you), are herbs like basil, oregano, chives, and other plants that can be harvested easily and are simple to grow. These look great planted in window boxes either indoors or outdoors, and like to be planted next to each other. Other options might include small zucchini (always prolific), tomatoes, leaf lettuces, fruit trees like orange or lemon, that add shade and beauty as well as are harvestable.

Landscape Layout of House Grounds, Part Three

Play Areas

Some people are interested largely in areas for outdoor play and sports, while keeping in mind possible conversion of such areas later on to more passive uses as the children grow up and leave home.

The assortment of possible recreational facilities includes swimming pools; archery ranges; bathhouses; bowling and putting greens; courts for tennis, badminton, volleyball, and basketball; shuffleboard; quoits; croquet; paddle tennis; and clock golf.

Small children require a sunny play area near the house, near a covered porch, and within view of the kitchen. This area may be combined with a drying yard; or it can be a small grassy plot, fenced in and containing a sandbox, a swing, a seesaw, climbing apparatus, and a space for playing croquet. Such an area might be used in later years for teenage games.

While grassy surfaces are generally best for small children’s play, there should be smooth, hard spaces upon which they can ride tricycles and scooters and roller skates. Also included might be a wading pool, so located that, when the children are grown, it could serve as a reflecting pool.

A playhouse for children has all sorts of possibilities, both in its architecture and inside equipment. A large tree may suggest the construction of a tree house.

Service Area

The service area complements the activities of the house. It should include space for clothes drying, for the growing of fruits, vegetables, and herbs or cut flowers, for the storage of tools, implements, summer furniture, and firewood, and for the disposal of garbage. The walking distance between the house and service areas should be short. The service yard, since it is near the area where the mother will be working, is sometimes used as a play yard for small children.

The kitchen garden is often found in the service area. Although its plant arrangement is, of course, primarily functional, it may also be aesthetic.

Enclosures

Enclosures are useful for defining the various areas, for hiding views of service areas, and providing protection, shelter, and background. Enclosures may be formed of structural or living materials. In properties that are greatly restricted, walls, screens, and treillage will be particularly useful. There may be pergolas or creeper-covered bowers, or permanent structures with roofs and openings equipped perhaps with sliding screens. Shrubbery or fences properly planned will insure the required privacy.

Garden Furnishings

People need places to sit in outdoor living areas; they need tables for food, drinks, and reading matter They need outdoor cooking facilities, either permanent or movable.

Permanent seats should be carefully placed in relation to the landscape design, whether against a wall or hedge or in the open. They are usually placed to take advantage f a view, and an adequate stretch of paving is provided beneath and in front of them. They should be capable of withstanding all sorts of weather.

Outdoor fireplaces or barbecue stands are important garden furnishings. They may serve as a focal point on a patio or terrace, and should be accessible to the kitchen. They may be set in the midst of grass or paving. They may take the form of fire pits or low-level or counter-high grills, with or without chimneys, sheltered or unsheltered.

Garden sculpture should be used sparingly, and should be carefully placed. It should be well conceived and executed. It may include urns, vases, sundials, statues of humans or animals, or imaginative forms.

A birdbath is a charming garden feature, with its attraction for birds and the life, color, and song they add to the scene. It should be placed in a favorable position for watching birds. It should be set on a high pedestal that is well away from plantings or other hideaways for cats and other predatory animals. The pedestal should be given a firm foundation and should have a direct pipe connection with the water supply.

Sundials depend a great deal for their success on proper placement. They may be located centrally or in a secluded nook, preferably with a substantial foundation. A sundial of simple outline can be quite effective.

City Trees in Landscaping, Part Two

City Trees in Landscaping, Part Two

Transplanting

Most city trees are transplanted, although there are of course exceptions. A city park created from the original countryside may contain the original trees. A development laid out by a superior builder in conjunction with a landscape architect will contain as many of the original trees as possible. Trees are a valuable asset and take years to reach full growth.

The best size tree for normal transplanting has a trunk diameter of 2 to 3 inches and a height of 10 to 12 feet. Trees of this size are large enough to improve the landscape and to survive the shock of moving. Normally the ball, or roots, measure in feet what the trunk diameter measures in inches. If it is necessary for you to transplant a tree, keep two points in mind:

1. Measure and specify sizes correctly. The size of a tree in indicated by its caliper (diameter of trunk), height, and ball size. Example: a 4 inches caliper 16 feet high and a 4 feet ball size.

2. Estimate the weight of the ball so that you will not be surprised and encounter handling problems. To estimate, square the diameter of the ball, in inches; multiply the result by the depth of the ball, in inches; subtract one-third from this amount, and multiply the result by 0.075.

For example, let us estimate the weight of a 2 feet ball with a 20 inches depth:

242 X 20 = 11,520

11,520 ─ 11,520/3 = 11,520 ─ 3,840 = 7,680

7,680 X .075 = 576 lb

This is no small weight, and when you realize that a 3 feet ball with a 30 inches depth may weight close to a ton, you will appreciate how important it is to have on hand the manpower and equipment to handle the weight.

Sometimes in order to obtain special immediate effect, full-sized trees must be planted. This can be done successfully if the trees are given special handling and if the ball size is kept in proportion to the caliper. For large trees, 6 inches to 10 inches caliper, the ball size should be 6 feet to 10 feet in diameter.

Tree Guards

After transplanting, trees should be wrapped to prevent sunburn, and then protected by tree guards. These tree guards may be elaborate wrought-iron constructions or simple wire fencing. The important thing is to guard against vandalism.

House Landscaping: The Role of Retaining Walls

House Landscaping: The Role of Retaining Walls

Article by Landscape East & West

In the course of home ownership, many people may find they need to add a retaining wall to their properties. These features are more than just a cosmetic improvement; they serve an important function in house landscaping by minimizing soil erosion. The following is a look at the major functions of a retaining wall, clues that you might need to add one to your property, and design options to compliment your house landscaping.

Functions

Especially in wet areas of the country, it's important to consider drainage techniques in your yard and lawn care. Portland retaining and retention walls, for example, can be designed to direct rainwater away from the home. This structural feature can also:

Increase usability. A retaining and retention wall can create a flat area by holding back the soil on a slope. If the land slopes around your house, landscaping retention walls can make your whole yard much easier to use.

Hold slopes in place. Slopes are great for views but challenging for your home's stability. Retaining walls battle gravity by keeping the soil on a slope in place.

Boost built-in seating. One of the unanticipated services landscaping retaining and retention walls can provide is additional seating. The top of this landscaping feature is a nice place to sit and chat.

Signs You Might need a Retaining Wall

Soil fault lines are uphill from your property. During earthquakes, land often slides away from fault lines. Does a fault line run above your property? If so, a landscaping contractor might recommend adding a retaining and retention wall for increased stability.

Downhill erosion is impacting your property. Are you battling mountains of soil and debris deposited on your property via erosion? If so, a retaining wall can help redirect or absorb rainwater and slow the rate of erosion.

A sliding hill is threatening your home's foundation. On the downhill slide of a slope, erosion can wear away and weaken a home's foundation. In contrast, the uphill side of a foundation may be compacted by erosion. In both cases, a retaining or retention wall can help provide helpful services; landscaping architects can design the feature to stabilize homes on sloped properties.

Design Options

A retaining wall is a practical and functional landscape feature, but that doesn't mean it can't be beautiful, as well. Common materials for this type of feature include:

Natural stone. Natural stone is the most expensive (and, many say, the most attractive) retaining wall option.

Interlocking blocks or poured concrete. Interlocking blocks or poured concrete walls are less expensive than their natural stone counterparts. A modern-style home design pairs well with these types of retaining walls.

Timber walls. Because timber walls often do not last as long as other retaining wall options, timber retaining walls are usually the least expensive choice.

Whichever wall material you choose, it's smart to incorporate drainage in your design - otherwise, your wall could eventually crack or buckle. This may be a way to help you choose among service providers; Landscaping companies that can't design this feature with built-in drainage should be removed from your list of potential contractors.

These walls create flat planting areas while providing slope stabilization. When considering adding a this feature to your landscaping, don't automatically assume that the job can be done by the same outfit that provides your lawn care; Portland landscaping gurus know that building a retaining wall requires engineering prowess.
