Q&A: How do I kill grass under my landscaping?

Question by Anna V: How do I kill grass under my landscaping?
Okay so this is what happen. Someone told me that if I throw soil on top of my grass that my grass will die and won't grow anymore. Well that didn't happen! My back yard is big! I did 40yrds worth of landscaping and now grass is growing thru all my landscaping! How can I get rid of the grass underneth my landscaping w/ out digging up all my plants and garden soil? I'm soo stressed out and just don't know what to do anymore.

Answer by nowaynohow
If the stuff you put in is mostly trees and shrubs, then I'd cover most of the open space (not too close to you new plants) with black plastic. The sun will heat that up, and over a week or two will bake the grass underneath. For what is close to your new stuff, pull. Pull the tops off every day for three weeks, and most of it will be gone.

Are there any ways of conserving water in landscaping?

Question by ana ruth g: Are there any ways of conserving water in landscaping?
What plants are suitable for landscaping that would help save water, and stil beautify the lawn? Are there any preferred type of soil here? Does the soil still need any fertilizers? How to do this now- SAving water in ladscape?

Some of the biggest water savers are things you put in the soil.

The best one is a crystal that turns into a gel when it contacts with water. It then releases the water as the lawn gets gets dried out. There are many companies that make it. http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=gel+water+soil&fr=yfp-t-447&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8

Vermiculite and perlite are fairly inexpensive in large quantities but not as effective.

By the way, NASA is predicting severe future water shortages in the Southwest.

Landscaping Tips For After The Storms

Landscaping Tips For After The Storms

Article by Landscaping Supply

“Will winter ever end?” is the question on many a landscapers minds who are struggling with the endless snowstorms hitting the vast majority of the United States and the good news is that “YES!” the snowstorms and blizzards will end. The bad news? It could leave behind mold and mildew if necessary landscaping precautions and steps are not taken. Snow mold and mildew is the yucky aftermath of heavy snowstorms and could wreak havoc on all landscaping, lawns and gardens.

Snow mold can be identified by two identifying qualities–it’s a fungus that grows after the snow melts and is either gray or pink in color. Gray snow mold grows on the leaf or the blade of a plant while pink snow mold, the worst type of snow mold, infects the crown of the plant.

Landscaping efforts to remedy this are to focus on keeping the lawn and garden areas dry. Of course, when the lawn or garden is covered under a thick sheet of ice or a few feet of snow, this isn’t possible. What is possible, however, is ensuring the lawn is not covered during the first initial weeks of spring or when the snow melts and warmer temperatures return. A second step is to get outside in the chilly temperatures and rake the grass to loosen any potential mold. Landscapers might feel a little silly getting outside with a rake in sub-zero temperatures, however, it is necessary to ensure a healthy mold-free lawn for spring.

Many landscapers, professional and amateur, also dread the after storm brown patches that are caused from dry, humidity free air as the snow melts. A lawn or garden that isn’t watered properly are more susceptible to brown patches after a winter storm–yes, even when sitting under a thick sheet of ice or a few feet of snow. As the snow melts, the air remains so dry and the melted snow does not provide enough moisture that a lawn or garden can retain.

Avoiding nitrogen rich fertilizers and maintaining a consistent watering schedule in the spring, summer and fall will greatly help aid and will lessen the amount of brown patches seen in lawns after the cold temperatures of winter.

Landscapers are also encouraged to check every few weeks for new mold growths, for mildew growths and for the early appearance of brown patches to ensure spring will bring a healthy mold-free lawn or garden!

Once the snow ends and the temperature increases, homeowners should look out for springtime challenges like powdery mildew, fungus, mushrooms, and other warmer weather diseases. For now, waiting for the last of winter to pass and restoring your lawn to health is a good next step.

How can I make my landscaping look better?

Question by sugar b: How can I make my landscaping look better?
We moved into a new home last year with nice landscaping with nice boring flowers in it. The people before us put down wood chips over the soil and had several different bushes and flowers scattered around. I can tell they just got lazy and never tended to the flowers or bushes. I had to rake up all the dead leaves from up under the bushes, trim the bushes, and most of the wood chips are gone. It looks extra boring. What should I do? The neighbors landscaping looks so neat and pretty.

Hi,

you could maybe add some more interest and focal points with container plants and/or sculptures. Am thinking different levels, so have a pot with some really bright flowers or a plant with interesting leaves placed in a pot higher up than the 'boring' plants below.

There are also lots of smaller trees and bushes with lovelyfoliage which could add interest (try some of the acers - red leaves maybe, or pink turning green).

Containers themselves could add interest; paint an old barrel an bright colour and pop brightly coloured bedding plants in it or a bush with dark green foliage. Generally play around with pots at different heights.

Statues positioned in odd, unexpected corners or some small waterfeature. Break the view up with paths which squiggle round the garden instead of straight lines - stepping stones are cheap and easy to put down.

Basically just introduce different textures, shapes and heights and the odd unexpected item - you can go down your local junk yard for inspiration or so an image search online for 'interesting garden design'.

Good Luck!

Question by Jeffery P: What is a good way to advertise my landscaping business?
I'm looking at starting a small landscaping business this summer. I need to get my name out there a little more, I've posted on craigslist and I am planning on putting posters up. Are they any other good websites or places to post? Preferably cheap or free.

Best answer:

Answer by oh, i see....
i would get some business cards made and leave them for potential customers. leave your cards where your customers are. vistaprint.com is a good website to get free business cards. new neighborhoods are good. maybe you could do one house for free and it turn you get to post a sign advertising your work. another way to advertise for free is to get your local newspaper to do an article in their newspaper about your "business grand opening".
