Gardens: Landscaping in Small Spaces

Article by Chris Orser Landscaping Inc.

Gardens come in about every shape and style imaginable. Even if space is limited, it is not difficult to create an engaging backyard landscape.

One of the keys to planning gardens in small spaces is choosing proportionate plant material. When installed in small areas, large, dense plants (like Hostas) can give a crowded feeling. The use of proportioned, tall elements (such as small trees) can offset some of these effects by expanding the garden space vertically.

Small plants have an opposite effect. If not carefully located, they will make a garden feel disorganized. This can be countered by having a strong central element like a rock or small water feature.Another very important aspect of designing with limited space is repetition. Try to repeat foliage patterns and install plants that have similarly colored blossoms. Utilizing this technique will make an area look larger than it really is. Additionally try to use a few vibrant colors and lots of green to create visual movement.

Finally, do not underestimate the ability of potted plants to transform your space. Be sure to use plants of different shapes (spiky, dense, and cascading), colors and textures to make your container garden come alive.

Gardening in small spaces does not have to be a challenge, but by being creative and having a clear plan in mind, you will be able to maximize the appearance of space.
