Question by someguy29: Is it best to wait for a while before landscaping?
I've heard some say that it's best to wait for about a year after building a new home before landscaping. Or is it alright to do it right away?

If you have a basement it is better to wait as the ground around the foundation of the basement will settle some. Any time land is cleared to build there will be some settling of the soil.

What are the average bids?

Best answer:

Answer by Brad
The best time to put in bids for lawn mowing and landscaping is in the fall. So for 2010 you need to put them in in the fall because most companys prepare the budgets in the winter for the next year. How do I know this? Because I have been doing it for 16 years. I own and operate a lawn and landscaping company. You should visit www.lawnsite.com it is a website that is FREE that will answer any and every question you ever had about the business.Good luck and Take Care

Question by : Best reference to learn Spanish landscaping and gardening terms?
Fluent in Spanish but going to be teaching some Spanish landscaping classes. What is the best way to get familiar with the slang words?

Best answer:

Answer by GoBucks
Having worked with a lot of Hispanic guys over the last 15 years in landscaping, I've found the best way to pick up the job specific slang or more commonly used terms is basically just asking them. A lot of reference materials and even classes for Landscaping Spanish rely far too heavily on dictionary terms. I can't tell you how many times I've used a word from one of these Landscape Spanish dictionaries only to have the guys just look at me blankly. I'm not fluent in Spanish but I can definitely get by and I know I have decent pronunciation so that wasn't the issue. It just wasn't the commonly used term. I've even had situations where there are different terms at different companies. Anyway, in my opinion you're better off just talking with some Spanish speakers in the landscape industry and not wasting a lot of time with reference materials. I'm sure they'll be glad to help because I know it's just as frustrating for them as it is for me when I'm not able to communicate with them effectively.

Best landscaping methods for southern Arizona?

Question by CCS: Best landscaping methods for southern Arizona?
I have had an un-landscaped front yard for 5+ years because I don't want to do it wrong. Of the 5 contractors I had give me ideas with estimates, NONE of them ever got back with me. I figured it was harder than I thought.

anyway, What are the methods, layer by layer that landscaping material needs to be laid? How can I keep weeds from growing through underlayment and new landscaping? What are the most mainenance free desert plants I can landscape with? What watering system should be used?

Best answer:

Answer by Anita
Your best bet is to look around your neighborhood to see who has to maintain their yard, and who doesn't. There are so many options out there, it is difficult offer a single suggestion. If you want to xeriscape, you won't need a watering system; once your plants are well established, they will survive on what nature provides.

Do not be afraid, if you make a mistake, you can correct it. Change is good, but you have to put in something that may or may not be the look you're looking for. If you don't do anything, you'll never know.

You don't have to do the whole yard at once, just start with one area, come up with a plan, and then execute it. Make sure you consider the view from the inside of your house as well as curb appeal.
