Question by mkt: How can you have grass & tree landscaping in a very dry environment AND be ecologically responsible?
We live in the desert - it rains little and it's incredibly hot & dry in the summer. I'm SICK of desert landscaping. Cactus & rock. BLAH.

I want a LOT of grass & trees as well. Can we landscape this way AND make it "green"? I don't want a guilt trip for a lawn.
I beleive we are (gardening) Zone 8.

Use drip irrigation instead of sprinklers. That way the water gets to the plant and grass roots and not into the air where it will just evaporate. You will still have a high water bill. Grass is not very compatible to the desert.

Question by pat w: getting rid of grass for new landscaping project?
I am starting a new area for landscaping that is all grass. What is the best way to start so I have less problems later on with grass and weed growing through the landscape screen and the mulch?

I would spray with (round up) to kill the grass. Before you start your project-- dig the dead grass up and remove it-- then for about a month cover this area with black vinyl and make sure the ends are down by putting brick or something to hold the vinyl down. When no sun gets to the area for a month + you should have safely killed the weed and grass roots. This has worked for me. Good luck with your project.

Question by Thomas Z: What is the best approach to get rid of weeds & grass from landscaping (stones)?
We moved into our recently purchased house here in (MI), now that the snow is finally gone and the everything is growing/blooming, we are finding that the landscaping has some issues. The main problem is that weeds and grass is starting to grow through the white landscaping rocks. I'm not sure how long the landscaping has been there. In some of the areas I can see the black mesh material. I want to have a nicely landscape yard, and I guess I actually have that, except for the weeds and grass popping up. Any suggestions?

An easy solution, if there aren't too many weeds, is to keep a spray bottle of white vinegar handy. Spray the weeds, let them dry out for a day - that will make them easy to rip out. The vinegar is environmentally friendly.

Are the spaces between the stones large enough to put your hand in? If so, maybe you can stuff some black weed paper in there. This is a thin, black, felt-like material that impedes plant growth. I put it under my mulch in the landscaping beds last year, and I didn't get any weed growth.

Good luck!

I did 40yrds worth of landscaping and now grass is growing thru all my landscaping! How can I get rid of the grass underneth my landscaping w/ out digging up all my plants and garden soil? I'm soo stressed out and just don't know what to do anymore.

Answer by nowaynohow
If the stuff you put in is mostly trees and shrubs, then I'd cover most of the open space (not too close to you new plants) with black plastic. The sun will heat that up, and over a week or two will bake the grass underneath. For what is close to your new stuff, pull. Pull the tops off every day for three weeks, and most of it will be gone.
