Q&A: How do I start a landscaping business?

Question by : How do I start a landscaping business?
I dont' want to be driving a truck from one block to another and pushing the mower myself. I see all these independent people working in landscaping and I want to get them to work for me. I'm thinking of buying routes and contracting it to the people who works them .

Best answer:

Answer by Steve
The route you are taking is going to be difficult and I haven't seen anyone pull it off yet.

The reason why these independent people are out there servicing lawns is simply because they can. You have to ask yourself why would they want a middleman in their equation when they can simply find work themselves and keep all the profit.

If you are looking to purchase lawn care accounts I included a source on a discussion of the topic and I think it will be helpful.

Sincerely,
Steve

Answer by stingyguru
Depends

Are you doing any spraying or using any heavy equipment! If so, yes!

Actually, yes! Get insurance. Imagine something happens to someone while your working,

Or you spray for spiders and some kid gets sick, or your worker chops off his foot...

Get Insurance!

what all do I need to start my landscaping?

Question by rockout707: what all do I need to start my landscaping?
I want to start doing minor landscaping jobs, and dont know what kind of tools i will need other thatn lawnmower, weedeater, and blower. what do i need for the winter time, what kind of work can i do in the winter time? what all services do I need to offer?

Best answer:

Answer by pdudgeon_1
you'll need a hedgetrimmer, pruning shears, rakes, spade, shovel, sharpening tools, snow blower, an aerator, a duster, and a sprayer.

as for extra services think of the following:
a small tiller will also come in handy in the Spring and Fall for preparing vegetable and flower gardens.

a chipper/shredder and a chain saw can be used to quickly clean up leaves and branches in Fall, or after major storms.

A power drill with an auger attachment will also be good for drilling holes for bulbs in the Fall, cutting thru surface roots, and drilling holes to set out beds of potted plants in the Spring and Summer.

A snow blower can clear walk ways and driveways in Winter time.

Question by Steve G: I work full-time (M-F) and want to start a landscaping business on the side. What is the best way to begin?
I'm not in a position to leave my full-time job. My question isn't related to getting clients, a business plan, or start-up capital. I'm not sure how I balance starting and growing this type of business while working full-time. I landscaped for a municipality throughout college. Also, are people open to having landscaping done on weekends? Thank you for you help.

Best answer:

Answer by howtosecret
Easy! After you have all the things you don't want answered (clients, business plan, and start up capital), you begin doing landscaping on the evenings and weekends when you are not working.

I know, you are going to be tired! But, if a landscaping company is your dream - you will love every second of it, and before you know it you will be able to tell your current boss that you quit!

Yes, people are very open to having landscaping done on the weekends! I see it all the time.

Good luck, and congratulations on your new venture!
